A Good First Edition, first printing of the second instalment of Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy with the print errors on pages 111 ("season" instead of "seasons") and 350 ("maylike" instead of "may like").
Previously owned by Hesper Le Galliene Hutchinson with her signature and notation on the front free endpaper dated Christmas 1954.
Hardback, 8vo (approx 8.5 inches / 21.5 cm tall), 352 pages with the folding map at the rear in Very Good condition.
Book Condition - Good:
Moderate to significant general wear and soiling to the original maroon boards and spine (cloth chip to front board fore-edge with very small amount of underlying board visible).
Securely bound with hinges intact, instances of early internal separation with some gatherings protruding very slightly at the fore-edge but text block sound with no loose pages, top edge pink (unevenly faded), light to moderate browning / foxing to text block edges (bottom edge unevenly trimmed), significant foxing to the free endpapers, intermittent mostly light internal foxing / soiling (very occasional moderate foxing), overall internally Good on light cream coloured paper.
