A complete set of the first (four volume) edition, fully rebound in brown calf. Originally published in 1749 in six volumes with this four volume edition issued later the same year.
Ex-Leyton Reference Library but originally owned by the Leyton Literary Club with their stamps and a hand-written notation in antique script on the Title Pages (Volumes 1 & 2 also carry a neat antique presentation inscription on the blank page following the front free endpapers).
Hardback, 16mo (approx 6.5 inches / 17 cm tall), xx + 304; viii + 330; x + 288 and xii + 347 pages (all pages confirmed present - a very small number of pages in each volume are incorrectly numbered).
Book Conditions (All Volumes) - Fair:
Moderate to significant general wear and rubbing to the calf boards and spines (five raised bands on spines, some joint splitting - most notably to Volume 1 which has a 2 inch / 5.5cm split to the top half of the rear board and a half inch / 1cm split to the bottom of the front board but all boards firmly attached, very small amounts of underlying boards visible at some corner tips, top corners repaired), endpaper hinges cracked but text blocks firm with no loose pages.
No previous ownership inscriptions but "Withdrawn" library plate on front pastedowns and occasional circular library stamps, occasional paper wear with very occasional loss to corner tips and some small paper edge chips, areas of lighter printing to a couple pages in Volume 3 (text still legible), 1.5 inch / 4cm horizontal closed tear to the top portion of the text in Volume 1 page 77-8 (very small amount of text loss), moderate to significant internal foxing / soiling (occasionally heavy).
