A First Edition reading copy of this account of the Second Opium War - still in its original red cloth and gilt boards but in need of repair.

The narrative starts with the arrival of British troops in Hong Kong in March 1860 and continues to the burning of the Summer Palaces the following October and the author's onward journey to Nankin before returning to Shanghai. At the time Wolseley was with the 90th Light Infantry serving as Quartermaster-General to the British expeditionary force (he later became Field Marshal and "commander-in-chief of the forces"). Also includes two Appendices - "Treaty of Tien-tsin" and "Convention of Pekin".

Book Condition - Fair: Hardback, 8vo (approx 8.5 inches / 22 cm tall), xiv + 415 pages with a tissue guarded frontispiece photograph of Lieut-General Sir James Hope Grant.

Moderate general wear to the original red boards and spine (wear to corner tips with small amounts of underlying boards visible, small areas of rubbing / chipping to cloth at spine extremities, short joint split at top of spine adjoining the rear board with further splits developing), gilt spine lettering and decoration faded but still clear, front board gilt lettering / decoration very clear and bright.

Front hinge very weak and rear hinge broken, a couple instances of significant internal separation with two gatherings only loosely held by the binding cords but no detached pages, all edges heavily gilt (faded but still bright), school prize certificate on front pastedown (dated 17th May 1867), lightly pencilled notations opposite the half title, infrequent light to moderate finger smudging and occasional light foxing / soiling, internally mostly clean and clear in an easily readable condition.
