A Good First Edition, first printing of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of divided loyalties during the Jacobite rising.

The following First Edition points have been confirmed present, "l" missing from "should" in the footnote on page 41, "f" in "from" is raised at the beginning of line 10 on page 90, four pages of advertisements at the rear (including full page advertisements for Kidnapped, The Black Arrow and Treasure Island) followed by an unpaginated publisher's catalogue dated "5 G 7.89", twelve titles listed on the reverse of the front free endpaper (some copies have ten, others have twelve or fourteen but no printing priority has been established).


Hardback, 12mo (approx 7.5 inches / 19cm tall), viii + 332 pages + four pages of advertisements and a publisher's catalogue at the rear (last couple pages of the catalogue still unopened at the fore-edge).

Book Condition - Good:

Light to moderate general wear and light soiling / rubbing to the original red boards and spine, light fading to spine cloth but gilt lettering still clear and bright, board illustrations and title lettering very clear, securely bound with hinges fully intact (light text block lean).

Some instances moderate internal separation but no loose pages, no previous ownership inscriptions, floral endpapers, moderate browning and significant foxing to text block edges, intermittent mostly light internal foxing (occasionally moderate to significant - most notably to the prelims as far as the half title and to the publisher's catalogue at the rear), occasional light soiling, half inch / 1cm split to the front free endpaper fore-edge, overall internally Good in a clear and easily readable condition.
