A privately owned First (Subscriber's) Edition of Joseph Halfpenny's illustrations of York with thirty three plates (plus the Title Page and unindexed illustration of Fishergate Bar) and all text pages confirmed present in Good to Very Good condition.
Whilst the paper used for the plates has moderate to significant foxing this is largely confined to the plain surrounds and the illustrations themselves have mostly only light to moderate foxing as can be seen in our photographs (high resolution / large format versions available on request).
Hardback, Folio (approx 14.5 x 11.5 inches / 37 x 29cm), [vi], iii, [blank], 10 page "Historical Compendium Of The Walls And Bars", 34 plates (the last being unnumbered), 19 (un-numbered) pages of plate descriptions, [blank], three pages of subscriber names.
Nearly all the tissue guards are also present (two of the thirty four are missing, the guards are very fragile and worn / creased but still substantially intact).
Book Condition - Good:
Significant to heavy general wear to the rebound "morocco-effect" paper-covered boards and spine, securely bound with all pages firmly held, heavy vertical creasing to the front free endpaper, no previous ownership inscriptions, significant to heavy browning / foxing to the plain endpapers and prelims (up to and including the Title Page), text pages clean and clear with very occasional light foxing / soiling (moderate browning to the first descriptive page following the final plate).
