A Good First Edition, second printing of the first instalment in Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy. First published July 1954 and reprinted here for the first time the following December ("4" printed at the bottom of page 49).
Previously owned by Hesper Le Galliene Hutchinson with her book plate on the front pastedown and presentation inscription on the front free endpaper dated Christmas 1954.
Hardback, 8vo (approx 8.5 inches / 21.5 cm tall), 423 pages with a two-colour map of the Shire, two mono illustrations to the text and large folding map at the rear in Very Good condition.
Book Condition - Good:
Moderate general wear but significant to heavy soiling to the original maroon boards and spine (small chip to middle of spine, tiny amounts of underlying boards visible at front corner tips).
Securely bound with hinges intact, text block sound with no loose pages, top edge pink, light browning / foxing to text block edges, occasional light creasing to corner tips and a couple very short closed edge tears, isolated spots of very light internal foxing but internally Very Good on light cream coloured paper in a very clean and clear condition.
