A Good copy of this matching two volume set.
The descriptions in Volume 1 (Land Birds, first published in 1797) were mostly written by Bewick's partner (Ralph Beilby - his former master) but with the end of the partnership the descriptions in Volume 2 (Water Birds, 1804) were written by Bewick himself but proof read and revised by the Rev. Henry Cotes, Vicar of Bedlington.
Book Condition, Volume 1 - Good: Hardback, 346 pages + 38 page introduction, glossary of terms and contents list. Quarter-bound calf and marbled paper boards, moderate to significant general board wear and bumping, spine worn with joint split adjoining front board, top of spine trimmed, securely bound internally but front and rear endpapers cracked with cords visible, title page loose but still attached, no inscriptions, Thomas Bewick cutting from the November 5th 1880 Daily Telegraph loosely inserted, internally very clean with light foxing and browning.
Book Condition, Volume 2 - Good: Hardback, 400 pages + 20 page introduction and contents list. Quarter-bound calf and marbled paper boards, significant general board wear and bumping, spine worn with joint split adjoining the front board, top of spine trimmed, text block firmly bound, no inscriptions, internally very clean with light foxing and browning, light offsetting to a small number of pages.
